Secrets of training success

Follow these golden rules of training a young dog and you wont go far wrong.

  • Its is only impossible until you do it.

  • Never overdo a lesson and bore the puppy.

  • Always make your puppy succeed, even if you have to go back to a lesson.

  • A happy pup will always want to learn more.

  • Combine your lessons with something your puppy enjoys, such as taking a walk or playing in the yard.

  • Never move on to the next lesson until you have perfected the previous one.

  • Always be consistent with the pup.

  • Five minutes a day, five days a week, for four months, this will save a ten year mistake.

  • Repetition, repetition, repetition.

  • Always firm, always fair.

  • Never ever lose your temper.

  • Playtime is as important as training time.

  • All training should be kept short and sweet.

  • Make haste slowly.

  • Start small and work your way up to greater things.

  • It will work if you practice and give it time.

  • Always end training sessions on a good note.

  • Keep distractions to a minimum in early stages of training.

  • All commands are soft and reassuring in early stages, never shouted.

  • Never pressure your pup into learning too fast, take each step as it comes.

  • Success is learnt, not born and bred.

  • 90% trainer, 10% dog.

  • Success = confidence.

  • Confidence = greater success.
